Your gastrointestinal/digestive flora is the good bacteria that lives in your gut that helps you to digest your food.
Over time, disrupting it with medications reduces your ability to digest and absorb the nutrition from your food. It shows up in all kinds of ailments. While medications can be lifesaving when needed, when over used, they contribute to personal health problems. It’s like eating fast food. It doesn’t take you out overnight, but rather, it breaks you down over time.
Here’s what your doctor doesn’t tell you. When the gastrointestinal flora is disrupted by use of prescription or over the counter medication, it compromises or reduces the function of your digestive system, and then you don’t digest your food as well. You don’t digest your nutrients as well.
When you don’t digest your food well, it’s like having low grade fuel to run your body on. Imagine running your car on gasoline that’s full of sand and grit that clogs up the motor, and slows it down. It’s like that. Therefore, you have less energy, less brain power. For many people, it causes them to become more susceptible to developing allergies.
I’m not saying that the use of medication is the only cause of all these things. I’m stepping way back and just looking at the issue of using over the counter medications as a lifestyle and how that is contributing to the epidemic of chronic disease in the United States.
Here’s what I think: Let’s save the medications and the big guns for when we really need them. Let’s build our skill in using natural home remedies for the smaller stuff and for prevention. Choosing to invest your time in learning about natural home remedies and prevention strategies is a game changer.
If it’s possible, you don’t want to start the over the counter medication loop with everyday things that you may be able to take care of with home remedies. Some people get started over the counter medications at a young age and don’t know that when you start disrupting your digestive tract, you are opening the floodgates for all kinds of possible future health problems.

Medications and Your Gut
Have you ever tried checking your medicine cabinet to see how many over-the-counter medicines your family takes to combat common ailments? And how some of these medicines are actually used to fight the side effects of other medicines?
Sadly, what so many people fail to realize is that these medications can adversely affect their health. What’s worse is that they don’t even realize it until its already too late.
Whether long-term or occasional use, these medicines disrupt the gastrointestinal flora or the good bacteria that helps you digest your food. If these good bacteria are continually disrupted with medications, over time it has long term effects on your ability to effectively digest your food.
The whole leaky gut conversation is starting to reach mainstream and over use of medications is one of the root causes.
Here are just a few things that can start to go wrong when you mess with your gut flora:
- Healthy cells – When you don’t digest well, it’s harder for your body to create healthy cells for tissue healing and regeneration.

Maybe you’ve run into the phrase “life hacks” while browsing the internet? I had a pretty good idea what it meant, but just thought I would see if I was on track, so I looked it up.
